San Francisco and Oregon – Aug 2022

In August our schedules all aligned so we could do a “tour of two nieces” – San Francisco to visit with Margaret and her boyfriend Micah, and Eugene, Oregon to visit with Rachel (that’s Dr Weissler to you :-).

We flew up to San Francisco and had a fun weekend with Margaret and Micah, getting to know their Presidio neighborhood. We had a nice walk to Tennessee Beach in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, visited the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park to see the Obama portraits among other things, let Robert get lost in the San Francisco Botanical Garden, also in GGP (well, he wasn’t lost, just enjoying himself…), enjoyed some truly wonderful meals, played games…a marvelous time overall.

We then picked up a rental car and headed up to Eugene, Oregon, visiting a couple of national monuments en route (Muir Woods, Cascades-Siskiyou), tasting wine at Berryessa Gap Vineyards tasting room in Winters, CA, and overnighting in Mt Shasta before reaching Rachel’s. Rachel too had planned a number of activities for us, including some walks, wine tasting at Sweet Cheeks, Silvan Ridge, and Willamette Valley Vineyards, and a visit to the track and field museum at the new Hayward Field on the Univ of Oregon campus. We also had a fun day trip out to the coast to beat the heat – it was pretty hot that week in Eugene – but at the shore visiting the Sea Lion Caves it was nice and cool. Fun times playing games in the evening and drinking even more wine! Eugene really is a lovely college town and we really enjoyed having Rachel show us around.

Soon it was time to head back to SF to drop off the rental car and fly home. En route we got in a visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park, and another wine interlude at Berryessa Gap Vineyards tasting room. One last night in SF at M&M’s apartment, including a lovely dinner at a Burmese restaurant – yum!

Overall a great time, and we’re looking forward to returning to SF, Eugene, and points in-between! (And no, it’s not just to revisit Arsicault Bakery and Voodoo Doughnut…)
