Cleveland Weekend, May 2015

On the trail at Shaker Lakes, Cleveland

We have wanted to visit Cleveland for awhile, ever since we heard they had the largest Slovenian population outside of Slovenia.  In mid-May we had our chance, and were very happy to visit for the graduation of Richard Wanerman from Case Western Reserve University School of Law.  (Richard’s father Rob and Robert are second cousins; their grandfathers Julius Farber and Mark [Farber] Markoff (he changed his name) were brothers.)   Continue reading Cleveland Weekend, May 2015

Bhutan – Apr/May 2015

Great Hornbill
Great Hornbill

Bhutan was on our bucket list for some time – east of Nepal, squished between China and India, it is a country of Gross National Happiness, Himalayan beauty, unspoiled forests, and – most importantly for us – it is a birder’s paradise.  In April/May of 2015 we joined Victor Emanuel Nature Tours for a 3+ week “trip of a lifetime”.

Birding Eastern Chiapas

White Hawk

In January 2015, Robert joined a tour offered by Mark Pretti Nature Tours to eastern Chiapas, Mexico.  The itinerary started from Tuxtla Gutierrez, climbed to San Cristóbal de las Casas in the Sierra Norte de Chiapas, then descended into the eastern tropical lowlands at Palenque and Bonampak, before concluding in Villahermosa in the state of Tabasco.  Read the full account and browse the gallery of bird photos to supplement this narrative.

Happy holidays!

December is here!  And that means it is time for another edition of the Weissler Holiday Gazette.  This is our 21st  22nd edition* – we have gone from paper, to a verbose website with a few photos (with German and French translations, no less), to a slide show of photos with fewer words, and now we’re changing it up a little again and just using our wordpress site.  Click here to read our year in review, and whatever you celebrate, hoping you enjoy the season and have a very happy new year.

* Liza can’t count.  First edition was in 1993.

Chile and Argentina – Oct/Nov 2014

IMG_1239We had been thinking for some time of a trip to Chile – birds and wine, what’s not to like?   Our usual tour companies didn’t quite go where we wanted to, so in late October 2014, we embarked on a trip on our own to central Chile, preceded by five days or so in Buenos Aires, Argentina.   Timing had the benefit of being their late spring, being as far south of the equator as Los Angeles is north.  Click here for a trip summary and links to lots of photos!  There is also a trip report Birding Argentina and Chile.

Portland – Sept 2014

With Tom, Robert, and Diane Mosher
With Tom, Robert, and Diane Mosher…but where’s the bride? 🙂

After not having been to a wedding for literally years, we went to
our second wedding in a few months – this one in Salem, OR, with the happy couple being Robert Mosher (son of our long-time friends Tom and Diane Mosher) and Kaila Studebaker.   We went up a few days in advance to do the sightseeing in Portland that we’ve never managed to get around to.
